The Rankin Family reunion — part two

LAURA JEAN GRANT
The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — The Rankin Family are reuniting once again.

Just two years since the beloved musical group from Mabou got back together for a special reunion tour, the four Rankin siblings are joining forces once more.

According to a release from the group’s publicist, no one is more surprised about the turn of events than The Rankin Family themselves. Their 2007 reunion tour was intended to be a one-time event but given its success, Raylene, Jimmy, Cookie and Heather decided to go back into the recording studio and hit the road together again in 2009.
Their 21-date cross-country tour will begin in Penticton, B.C., Feb. 4 and closes out with two dates in Nova Scotia — at Centre 200 in Sydney, Feb. 27 and the Metro Centre in Halifax, Feb. 28. Tickets for the show in Sydney will go on sale Dec. 5.

The February tour will feature the Rankins performing their classic hits along with new material from their forthcoming CD “These Are The Moments.” Anchored by remixed versions of Rankin Family favourites “Rise Again” and “Fare Thee Well Love,” the new album is being described as “a brilliant collection of songs, some new, some time honoured, that could not have found a more perfect time to be embraced.” The first single “Breathe Dream Pray Love” will be released to radio in the new year.

In addition, a television Rankin Family reunion special will be broadcast on CTV, Dec. 12.

The Rankin Family first began performing together in the late 1980s and during the next decade sold more than two million albums and toured around the globe. They won numerous East Coast Music and Juno awards before disbanding in 1999. The fifth member of the original group, John Morris Rankin, died in a motor vehicle accident in 2000.

Jimmy was featured on FX101.9 this evening and was asked about upcoming Rankin Family projects.
In addition to tour dates in January and February 2009, The Rankins will be releasing a new recording in early January as well.
They spent time recording in Toronto this past summer.
When asked when the TV special would air, Jimmy said he hadn't heard about a date yet (Hopefully soon).
So BIG stuff is happening in 2009! Which, BTW, will mark 20 years in the music biz for the Rankin Family!
Wow.
And WooHoo! and Yay!:D

Lineup set for Commons concert
Promoter promises 'biggest country show ever in Eastern Canada'
By STEPHEN COOKE Entertainment Reporter - Halifax Herald
Wed. May 7 - 5:10 PM

Country music’s redneck woman Gretchen Wilson
will live up to the title of her latest CD, One
of the Boys, when she joins the all-male lineup
of Country Rocks 2008 on Labour Day weekend.

On Wednesday, organizers for the all-day Halifax
Common concert on Saturday, Aug. 30 released the
full bill for the show, headlined by Australian superstar Keith Urban.

At a news conference at Halifax radio station
Country 101 CHFX-FM, Harold MacKay of Power
Promotional Events announced that Grammy-winning
Wilson would be on the list of newly added acts,
along with Newfoundland’s Great Big Sea, Nova
Scotian balladeer Jimmy Rankin and up-and-coming
Halifax performer Mark Cameron.

This boosts the number of acts for the 10-hour
concert to eight, including previously announced
performers Johnny Reid, Aaron Pritchett and Charlie Major.

“It’ll be the biggest country show ever in
Eastern Canada,” said MacKay, adding “the tone
will be a little more rock and roll,” noting
Urban’s tendency to toss out the occasional rock
tune by Led Zeppelin or Aerosmith.

With the addition of “hard partying country girl”
Wilson and the rambunctious Great Big Sea whose
new album Fortune’s Favour comes out in June
MacKay announced that they are adding a special
Student Zone to the event, with a reduced ticket
price of $69 (plus service charges).

Newcomer Cameron, a finalist on CMT’s Karaoke
Star, is the singer of the regional hit I Don’t
Want to Go from his CD Get ’Er Done. “It’s more
than an opportunity, it’s really a dream come true,” said Cameron.

Early bird tickets are still available at $89
(plus service charges), as well as VIP seating by
the stage at $219 (plus service charges). Tickets
are available at the Ticket Atlantic box office
(451-1221 or http://www.ticketatlantic.com) and
participating Atlantic Superstore outlets.

Country music’s redneck woman Gretchen Wilson
will live up to the title of her latest CD, One
of the Boys, when she joins the all-male lineup
of Country Rocks 2008 on Labour Day weekend.

On Wednesday, organizers for the all-day Halifax
Common concert on Saturday, Aug. 30 released the
full bill for the show, headlined by Australian superstar Keith Urban.

At a news conference at Halifax radio station
Country 101 CHFX-FM, Harold MacKay of Power
Promotional Events announced that Grammy-winning
Wilson would be on the list of newly added acts,
along with Newfoundland’s Great Big Sea, Nova
Scotian balladeer Jimmy Rankin and up-and-coming
Halifax performer Mark Cameron.

This boosts the number of acts for the 10-hour
concert to eight, including previously announced
performers Johnny Reid, Aaron Pritchett and Charlie Major.

My family won tickets to go see them when they played at the Saddeldome in Calgary in the early 90's. The radio LOVED it when they announced that the "Rankin Family, was going to see the "The Rankin Family". I was only about 11 or 12 at the time but that concert still stands out in my mind as one of the best I've ever been too. My family and I are living back in Ontario now and wondering if there are any plans to tour Ontario again??? we missed them lastyear by a week :(
